A Mezcal Spicy Mama is perfect for the end of the week. Made with smoky mezcal, Pama pomegranate liqueur, fresh lemon juice, agave and a kicker of spicy harissa or muddled jalapenos, this mezcal cocktail is sure to calm you down and rev you up!
I need a drink! Friday has rolled around and this week has been crazy. I know it may seem like this blog is finished, but I'm still waiting for the t's to be crossed and the i's dotted. Additionally Mother's Day is here which traditionally means the planting of the flower boxes and the cleaning of the deck which means work, work, work for me. And I don't even have my kids around to make me breakfast in bed. How I miss those days!
So last night with thoughts of all I need to do I asked Manservant to make me a drink. Not a cocktail because cocktails imply sipping. I wanted something hearty. Something that would perk me up and help get the laundry into the washer. Something that would cool my head because oh baby...it was 85 degrees in Denver yesterday! So my kind Manservant came up the steps and proceeded to make me a Mezcal Spicy Mama which don't you know... has been one of my more favorite drinks he's made in awhile.
Manservant loves tequila and he loves mezcal. I must say that mezcal has never been my fave, given how smoky it is. I mean I think smoke should only come from a grill; but he thinks smoke should come in liquid form and in the form of a cigar. Well, truth be told, there are lots of mezcals out there and he found one that suits me just fine! Sombra mezcal is one of his favorites when it comes to mixing drinks. It isn't too smoky and is the perfect mezcal to start with when first entering the world of agave.
He concocted a girly drink for me even though I don't think it's so girly. In my mind this mezcal cocktail achieves a great balance between sweet and sour and the smoke blends the two together. The pretty salt on the rim isn't just decorative. It tastes great too and adds another dimension to this very achievable drink. So many times when it comes to making cocktails one has to make a syrup, infuse something or other, buy some exotic bitters when all you want is a quick and good drink. Making the Mezcal Spicy Mama is easy! The hardest thing might be finding the mezcal you prefer. The other component and I love it, is the harissa. Harissa is a somewhat spicy chili paste with North African origins. There are a lot of varieties out there. Don't buy one that is heavy on the tomato. Taste it first. I recommend this one that comes in a tube . I don't find it too spicy at all. It keeps forever in the fridge.
I adore this drink. But then I adore whatever drink I'm drinking at the time. But to be honest I've asked for this drink more than once. So often that Manservant doesn't have to look up the recipe anymore. Yes, he has his own recipe book just for cocktails! He said he needed to come up with a name for it, but I beat him to the punch. I think Mezcal Spicy Mama suits this just fine! Because, well...I am one spicy mama! And now you know! Happy Mother's Day to all mama's out there!

I may not be a mama but like Manservant I'm a mescal fan. Love this combination. GREG

I've never tried mezcal. Not sure how I'd like the smoky flavor but I do love that your husband suited the cocktail to the occasion 🙂 It certainly looks delicious!
